Gem, Grinnell and Salamander Glaciers

Gem (upper left) Grinnell (center) and Salamander (upper right) Glaciers are visible. Gem's convex surface shows it is growing, for now. Grinnell and Salamander slump inward as the loss of ice is not made up by winter snows. The Park Service estimates all glaciers in the park will melt by 2025. The dark area on Grinnell is rock that in fact insulates the ice underneath. Over time the surrounding ice will melt away leaving pillars of ice supporting the rock above until it too melts, the sides exposed to the sun.
