Izaac Walton Lodge

We lunched at The Izaak Walton Inn, in Essex, MT, originally a barracks for the men who built this stretch of The Great Northern Railway in the late 1930's, on our return from Waterton to Kalispell. For the first time we received human-sized portions! This place is a train buffs heaven with cabooses fitted out as rooms on a nearby siding. In the bar are many photographs of old steam engines, train wrecks and one showing the lodge being brought in by flatcar in the heyday of railroad building. Cross-country ski trails now make the lodge a popular winter destination. Amtrak will drop you off and pick you up at the lodge by special arrangement.
