Granite Park Chalet

One of two remaining chalets built by the Great Northern Railroad is the Granite Park Chalet . A bit rustic, you pack in all your water and food, sleeping space can be rented. Nice touches were the large spikes driven through and poking out of the wooden window shutters to discourage bears. If I were a bear I'd pass on the chalet preferring the nylon wrapped humans in the adjacent campground.

After a break at the chalet we finished on the Loop Trail, 4 miles downhill to a stop lower down on The Going To The Sun Road. The rubble on the trail was a surprise to me, unlike the relatively smooth trails of the Canadian Rockies of last year's hikes. I tried to fly on the way down, Good takeoff, poor landing. The scraped leg looked a lot worse that it felt, the red argillite dust embedded in my knee a permanent souvenir of the park. At trails' end we cooled our feet in a cold mountain stream
