The Emerald Lake valley lay before us from the top of the pass. Ahead of us we faced a tortuous, rock covered, trail through a boulder field. More than a few of us ended up on our backsides as, tired and hot, the loose footing claimed us. Our goal is the flat, straight-line, trail across the alluvial fan leading to the lake.
